Is Power Technology sustainable for the future as a career?

As a power plant engineer, I can affirm that the answer is both yes and no. Are you confused? Allow me to clarify.

Power plants and power technology have been intertwined for a century now, as the demand for household appliances increases and the global GDP rises, poverty decreases, and new inventions and technologies emerge daily. Consequently, power is required to energize these appliances, and this demand is met by power plants. Consequently, the total number of power plants is increasing day by day, alongside a rise in power consumption per person. From mobile phones to Wi-Fi routers, from Teslas to laptops, and everything in between, every device requires power, emphasizing the necessity for power plants and, subsequently, power plant engineers.

However, let’s address the other aspect of the answer: why not? The development of power plants plays a crucial role here. There exist various categories of power plants, including engine-based, turbine-based, solar, hydro-based, nuclear, air turbine, etc. The choice of pursuing power technology as a career hinges on the types of power plants prevalent in your vicinity. For instance, if your country possesses abundant natural gas resources, the government might opt to construct gas turbine or gas engine-based power plants. In such a scenario, to advance your career in that country, you must comprehend gas-based power plants. However, these types of power plants may not be sustainable, as their reliance on gas extraction poses a risk. If gas resources become scarce, the government may abandon gas-based power plants, potentially jeopardizing your career as a power plant engineer.

In my opinion, to excel as a power plant engineer, one must study various types of power plants and undergo training across different plant types. This broadens your career prospects and equips you with the versatility needed to navigate the dynamic landscape of power technology.
